Advance BUY Tickets online Renowned Hopi Visual & Recording Artist Ed Kabotie & Tha ‘Yoties, (short for Coyotes) are a reggae/rock band based in Flagstaff, Arizona. The band is notable for their catchy melodies, lively performances, and conscious message. Combining influences of reggae, rock, metal and ska, Tha ‘Yoties refer to their style of music as “IrieZona Reggae Rock.” Lyrically, their message reflects the Tewa/Hopi heritage of singer/songwriter Ed Kabotie, whose words address historic and contemporary struggles of Native American tribes of the southwest. Through the universal language of music, Tha ‘Yoties are howling for the Indigenous people and lands of the Colorado Plateau. Ed Kabotie is an artist and musician from the Hopi Village of Shungopavi and the Tew Village of Khap’o Owinge. Ed considers himself to be an “edu-tainer” combining visual art, music and education for his performances. Kabotie is a third generation artist. His father, Michael Kabotie, and grandfather, Fred Kabotie are both well known for their contributions to the Indigenous arts community. Ed follows in their footsteps as an illustrator and sometimes silversmith whose work is represented in the collections of the Museum of Northern Arizona (Flagstaff, AZ), The Amerind Foundation (Dragoon, AZ) and the Minpaku Museum (Osaka, Japan). Kabotie’s solo music incorporates acoustic guitar, Native American flute, harmonica, percussion, and voice. His lyrics are sung in English, Hopi, and Tewa, and are often written in a storytelling fashion. He describes the music as “Nu-Native,” utilizing contemporary instrumentation as a vehicle to share the virtues of his Indigenous heritage, as well as our past and present struggles with colonialism. Ed will be performing solo the first half of the concert, with some likely references (lecture/demo) of some topics from his Four Corners lecture series. Tha ‘Yoties (short for Coyotes) are a reggae/rock band based in Flagstaff, AZ., and will be joining Ed in the second half of the concert. The group is known for their energetic performances, catchy melodies, and conscious message. |
