As part of the Spring Planting Festival, this gathering celebrates the diversity of ‘home grown’ talent that includes musicians, poets, and a bit of comedy and wit, from performers in the Verde Valley - Sedona area.
“The idea for this event sprouted when we started planning the Backyard Garden Expo with Diane Dearmore and Gardens for Humanity,” Co-Director of OTCA William Eaton remarked. “One of the leading initiatives for sustainability has become an emphasis on local resources, especially in regards to water and agriculture. Our evolution, and ancestry, has relied on that, not only for survival, but also as the foundation for our social interaction, and gatherings that led to the rituals of music and dance devoted to honoring the seasons, plantings, and harvest. This ‘home grown’ event is a celebration honoring that theme.”
The open mic nights at La Bella Café and OTCA, is also an inspiration for the ‘home grown’ players. Most of the guitarists and singers for this event come out of the talent pool that shows up for these events, which have been organized by Don Whitcher and Dan Engler. “There’s a simple honesty and sincerity that gets expressed at open mic,” Don commented. “More than entertainment you get a glimpse of reality and people’s basic emotions, whether it’s there own song or a cover.”
The Home Grown Music, Words and Wit concert will contain some of each, with the word-poet-humorist presenters interweaving their words & stories between the music acts. Musicians performing include: Joe Neri, Don Whitcher, Greg Tauriello, Connie Fisher, Jesse Kalu, Dan Engler, Ty, William Eaton, Mark Duffy, Dave Joslin, and Brett Williams. Words and Wit-sters include: author-poet James Bishop, writer-musician Dan Engler, actor-comedian Tony Carito, and John Neville, president of Sustainable Arizona, who will be on hand for a story or two, and to announce an eco-film series at OTCA.
